Swiftwater rescue is performed by a highly trained team of specialists who are trained to operate in higher risk, fast moving waters where they perform searches, rescues, and recoveries. Swiftwater Rescue Team members also operate on flatwater (lakes, ponds, etc) and on flat ice surfaces during the winter months. Qualifying GSAR team members can apply to be certified to join the Swiftwater team.
SRT members are trained in the following:

- Risk management
- Site safety
- Rope work pertaining to water rescue
- Swimming skills

- Swimming rescues
In addition, SRT members will sometimes work out of boats or watercraft depending on need. In Kamloops, the Thompson Rivers are an area that SRT members often operate on or along in addition to the many other rivers throughout the region.
